HOME / GALLERIES / MEDIA ARTS
Part of my artistic practice has been the exploration of sound. I collect audio field recordings and digitally alter them until I am satisfied that they reflect the nature of the environment in abstraction while referencing my emotional and sensory reaction to the original. Sound sources range from city centres to those captured bushwhacking through wilderness.
The photographs below were taken at the current gallery show “Altered Vision / Altered Sound” at ARTSPLACE Gallery, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada, until 22 December 2023.
The altered audio compositions are paired with paintings to encourage further contemplation of the imagery and vice versa. However, the soundscapes and the paintings can be experienced separately without the addition of the other.
Each set of paintings is presented with three accompanying soundscapes.
Consider each pairing while listening to the audio.
How do the soundscape and artwork relate to each other?
Do you think that any soundscape is a particular match for either painting?
Do the sounds influence your perception of the paintings at all?
